A logo says who you are, in a graphical way. If it looks cheesy, overdone, dated or too trendy, you risk sending the wrong message about your business. Everything your business does marketing-wise keys off the logo – that’s how important it is.
What do the colors say? Is it a simple word logo, or are there graphic elements? What do the graphic elements convey? Think about how your logo looks both reduced down to the size it needs to be for a business card, and blown up to the size of a trade show banner. Does it work at both sizes? Or are there too many details that get lost when it gets reduced in size?
Don’t skimp. When starting a business, or rebranding a business, it can be tempting to try to save a few pennies here and there. With a logo, that is a huge mistake. If your logo LOOKS like it was done by your teenage son, next-door neighbor or church friend, you send the message that your business is cheap and your image is not important.
No contests. It can also be tempting to hold a logo ‘contest’ so that you end up with hundreds of ideas to choose from. Not only could this get very overwhelming for you, but you are working with anonymous designers who care nothing about or your business, and so won’t be able to properly convey your business graphically.
